How Law Enforcement Applies Iris Recognition to Handheld Devices
7 July, 2026
Discover how IriTech’s ultra-slim iris scanner module upgrades mobile security devices for law enforcement, offering fast, secure, and on-board biometric identity checks in the field.
Executive Summary
Driven by the FBI’s Next Generation Identification (NGI) system, U.S. police agencies now need law enforcement devices that combine touchless iris recognition with traditional fingerprinting. This multimodal approach is necessary because officers often deal with suspects who have dirty, worn, or damaged prints.
Iris scanners provide a fast, touchless, and highly accurate backup. However, integrating this multimodal authentication into a single piece of portable police gear is a huge hardware challenge.
This case study explores how IriTech partnered with a leading law enforcement hardware developer to solve this space issue using the IriShield™-USB BO 2121 Slim. With an ultra-compact binocular design and on-board computing, IriTech delivered a highly secure iris scanner that fits perfectly into thin mobile devices without slowing down the main computer.
The Challenge
SIC is a leading technology partner specializing in mobile security hardware for law enforcement. While building a new multimodal mobile device for police, they needed to include several biometric features.
Their biggest challenge was finding the right binocular (two-eye) iris scanner. The required specifications were very strict:
- The module had to be extremely thin.
- It had to be highly secure for police use.
- It needed to operate without draining the battery or slowing down the main device’s processor.
The Solution: IriShield™-USB BO 2121 Slim
To meet SIC’s strict requirements, IriTech provided the IriShield™-USB BO 2121 Slim — an all-in-one iris identification camera. The module offers four major advantages for law enforcement operations:
- Ultra-Thin Design: We customized a highly compact, binocular iris camera that fits perfectly into the slim chassis of modern mobile police gear.
- Iris Image Quality Assessment: Using #1 NIST-ranked algorithms, the module continuously checks image quality during capture. It automatically selects the best clear photo and gives instant feedback if a re-capture is needed, ensuring maximum accuracy in the field.
- Secure On-Board Processing: The module includes an embedded processor to handle biometric tasks directly on the device. This keeps identity verification secure and fast, without relying on the main device’s processor.
- Eye Safety: The scanner uses infrared illumination at less than 2% of the LED Eye Safety Standard limit.
The IriShield-USB BO 2121 Slim keeps full binocular capture while cutting module depth from about 23.3 mm down to 13 mm — letting it fit into mobile devices with tight internal space, with no trade-off on multimodal capability (see more in the picture below).
These features perfectly address the core operational needs SIC identified: a thin form factor, highly reliable image capture, and secure use across extended field operations.

The Result: Companion 50SiT Tomahawk
A Compact, Handheld Solution Companion 50SiT Tomahawk was born from this successful collaboration. With the IriShield™-USB BO 2121 Slim taking full charge of the iris scanning, SIC created a highly portable, handheld device that fits perfectly in a police officer’s palm. It provides a military-grade biometric solution to securely verify identities anywhere in the field.
From SIC’s perspective, the Companion 50SiT Tomahawk represents the next step in bringing multimodal identity verification directly into the hands of officers, without compromising the ruggedness and reliability that law enforcement customers expect from SIC’s Companion line. Building on SIC’s experience deploying mobile biometric systems across state and federal environments, the Tomahawk was engineered to give agencies a single, dependable device for iris and fingerprint capture in the field — reducing the number of tools an officer has to carry while speeding up positive identification during time-sensitive encounters. The result is a device that reflects SIC’s core mission: giving law enforcement fast, secure, and field-ready identity tools they can trust in any operational environment.
Smooth Hardware Integration the IriTech’s slim module uses its own 128 MB of NAND Flash Memory and 128 MB of Mobile DDR SDRAM, the system processes data instantly without freezing the main device. The result is a lightweight, energy-efficient mobile device that is easy to carry on long shifts.
Essential for Law Enforcement By combining SIC’s rugged handheld design with IriTech’s fast dual-iris recognition, Companion 50SiT Tomahawk becomes an essential tool for law enforcement in various critical scenarios:
- Highway Traffic Stops: Identify suspects safely from a distance, even if they present fake IDs.
- Border Patrol & Checkpoints: Capture both eyes simultaneously to speed up processing times.
- Tactical & Field Operations: Carry lightweight gear that does not drain battery power during long shifts.
